Here’s what you should do if you suspect that you might have Covid-19.
Even though allergies are flaring up this time of year and we are exposed to tons of viruses every day, we know that when someone starts developing respiratory symptoms these days that their first thoughts turn to coronavirus. Wondering whether you should turn to our Silver Spring, MD, providers, Florence Odubayo and Victoria Bassey for a symptom evaluation or to find out if you should get tested? Here are some things you should know first,
What are the symptoms of coronavirus?
Despite what it might seem like from the news, most people who develop coronavirus will only experience mild symptoms. These symptoms will usually appear about 2-14 days after being exposed and the most common symptoms include,
- Dry cough
- Muscle aches and pains
- Shortness of breath
- Sore throat
- Loss of taste or smell
Some people have also reported gastrointestinal problems including diarrhea. These GI symptoms may be present on their own or in conjunction with respiratory symptoms.
How do I know that I have coronavirus?
There are some ways to determine whether you may have been exposed to Covid-19. Here are some things to consider,
- Have you recently been around someone who tested positive for coronavirus?
- Have you traveled to or visited an area with a high number of coronavirus cases?
- Are you at high risk for coronavirus (e.g. senior citizens; those with chronic diseases)?
When should I see a doctor?
Contrary to what you might think, if you are experiencing mild respiratory symptoms most providers in and around Silver Spring, MD, will tell you to avoid coming into the office. This is because they want to contain the virus, just in case the patient does test positive. Therefore, symptoms like a running nose, sore throat, body aches and fever do not warrant coming into the office. Do not leave your house. Give us a call and we will help you determine the next steps.
However, if you are experiencing a true medical emergency please call 911 or head directly to your nearest emergency room.
Who should get tested for Covid-19?
Wondering whether you should get the Covid-19 antibody test or not? While this is something that our providers would be happy to discuss with you over the phone, you may benefit from getting tested if,
- You are a hospital or healthcare work with symptoms
- You are living in a long-term care facility (e.g. nursing home; assisted living) and develop symptoms
- You have possible symptoms of Covid-19 infection
- You’ve been exposed to or come into contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19
The CDC outlines, in further detail, who should get tested for coronavirus. Remember that even if you have the antibodies this doesn’t necessarily mean that you are immune to Covid-19.
